A lorry driver died after his vehicle crashed into a Metro Rail site in Meenambakkam early on Thursday.

According to the police, Chinan (25) was a resident of Kirugambakkam. Around 1 a.m. on Thursday, he was driving the lorry loaded with sand, from the suburbs to K.K.Nagar.

“On his way, when he was crossing the Meenambakkam stretch, he must have dozed off and lost control of the vehicle. The site was properly barricaded and guarded yet the lorry entered the site, toppled and fell in a pit dug inside the site for construction purpose,” said a police source.

The driver died on the spot and his body was taken to Chrompet General Hospital for post-mortem.

Officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said none of their workers were injured and no work was in progress when the accident took place.
