After 200 years, buildings may stand tall in place of our fields, suggests the painting of V. Diwakar, a class VIII student from Senthamangalam village in Namakkal district.
Diwakar won the first prize in the drawing competition in ‘Eureka Little Creators’, an event conducted by Eureka Child Foundation, a non-profit organisation which runs tuition centres across Tamil Nadu to help less privileged children.
“If pollution continues to increase, someday all of us will be forced to survive just on tablets. Through my painting, I wanted to convey the message that we must take steps to preserve nature,” said Diwakar who wants to become a doctor.
Over 25,000 children from 600 villages across the State participated in the story telling, story writing and drawing competitions that were held as part of the event recently. Of these, 150 children were chosen for the final rounds in all three competitions. The finals were held at Madras Christian College on Sunday.
“Most children here belong to economically backward families and they don’t get an opportunity to display their talents. So we decided to conduct such an event and we want to keep doing this every year,” A. Ravi Shankar, director of Eureka Child Foundation.
A. Ramachandran, a class VIII student from Senthamangalam village in Namakkal district who won the second prize in the drawing competition said that he wants to come to the city someday and work as an engineer. “My parents are farmers. Even if I become an engineer I will learn farming practises from my father and assist him whenever I can,” he added.
Film director Cheran distributed the prizes.
