The Chennai Corporation will finalise in a week a list of city roads that need re-laying. The roads will be selected based on a survey taken up by the civic body, according to Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan.
The city has a total of 16,136 roads and streets, including 394 bus route roads. The bus route roads cover a length of 309 km in the city. The total length of roads in the city is 2,772 km.
As the civic body has started to permit road cuts for utility services, many of such roads are likely to be covered in the survey.
The Chennai Corporation has already re-laid 153 bus route roads and 112 interior roads under the Special Roads Programme 2010-2011, which was announced after the northeast monsoon last year. This year, the civic body is expected to re-lay roads at a cost of Rs.60 crore, an official of the Chennai Corporation said.
Apart from re-laying roads, the Chennai Corporation would also survey areas where street furniture is required on roads, the official said.
All bus route roads that would be re-laid under the Special Roads Programme would have road markings using thermoplastic paints and road studs.
A total of 1,080 street name boards are being readied for all bus route roads. Each bus route road would have at least three name boards.
A road would have single arrow boards on either side and double arrow boards at intersections.
