The lifts at the foot overbridge on Nungambakkam High Road have not been functioning for the past few days. The facility, the first such provided at an FOB by the Chennai Corporation, was inaugurated on January 31, as a measure to make it convenient for pedestrians.

Low voltage

Officials of the civic body said that the lifts could not be operated on a day last week and on Monday due to low voltage.

On Tuesday and Wednesday the shutters remained shut as the lift operator appointed by the contractor did not report for duty, they said.

Residents however said that on and off the lifts remain closed.

“At times one side is closed with the other remaining open, which is of no use for pedestrians. This leaves the pedestrians with little option other than dart across the road,” said S.Dakshinamurthy, a resident of East Namasivayapuram.

K.Balasubramanian, Secretary, Avenue Road Civic Exnora, said that the Corporation should ensure that the lifts work on all days. “They should be kept open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. There is no information board about the timings. Despite the FOB with lifts, many persons tend to run across the road. A traffic policeman should be posted there to prevent jay walking.”

Corporation officials said that the issue of the operator would be set right and the lift would start functioning again soon.
