A construction lift collapsed at the site of an apartment complex on Ethiraj Salai, Egmore on Wednesday evening, killing one worker on the spot and seriously injuring three others. A police probe is underway into the accident.
The accident took place around 5.30 p.m., at the site where construction is in progress for blocks of 16 floors each, totally over 200 apartments.
According to a worker onsite, four men were going up on a construction lift to get to one of the topmost floors.
“Suddenly there was the noise of wires snapping and the men came crashing down in the lift, which has an open platform. One of the workers died on the spot and the others were badly injured. They were all wearing helmets and illuminated jackets,” he said.
Egmore police identified the deceased as Bipin (25), and the injured workers as Nagaraj (20), Rohan (25) and Prabhulal (25). All four men are from the north and are employed on a contract basis at the site.
Co-workers and site officials rushed the three injured to Government Royapettah Hospital. After being administered first aid there, they were taken to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for further treatment. Their condition is now said to be stable, police added.
