Cement manufacturing company, ACC Limited, was awarded the Mother Teresa Award for Corporate Citizenship by Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA) on Friday.

The award is an annual honour given to a company for initiating environmentally conscious actions and extending service to underprivileged sections of the society, said Peter Xavier, director, LIBA. This year it was awarded to ACC Limited–Madukkarai Cement Works for initiatives such as building a ‘clean and green habitat’ and achieving self sufficiency in waste management through recycle and reuse of solid waste, he added.

Veteran oncologist and chairperson of Cancer Institute V. Shanta, chief guest at the event, emphasised the need for universal basic education to help people understand their rights and responsibilities. Maintaining quality and standards in the education system, she added, was paramount for better results and there should be no compromise on merit.

ACC Limited was among the five companies shortlisted by an award committee headed by N. Vittal, former CVC, and comprising experts from industry, academia and former government officials, LIBA officials said. Shyam Sundar, deputy manager, ACC Limited, accepted the award on behalf of the company.
