Leaders of political parties and writers have condoled the death of writer Jayakanthan, but the State government is yet to issue a condolence message.
DMK leader M. Karunanidhi, who paid his respects, said though Jayakanthan was strident in his criticism of the Dravidian movement, his approach changed with times and he showered affection on him.
He was also conferred the award of the Murasoli Trust for his contribution to literature.
It was Mr. Karunanidhi who made arrangements for his treatment in a major hospital in the city four years ago, and after his discharge he decided to visit the DMK leader before going home.
“He told me that I had saved his life. The words still ring in my ears,” Mr. Karunanidhi said.
CPI (M) State secretary G. Ramakrishnan said Jayakanthan was committed to socialist ideology and enriched Tamil prose through his writings.
