Following the protests by students of Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College on Wednesday, authorities have declared the college will be closed for seven days.
The hostelites have also been asked to vacate the premises.
According to a senior official, the hostels will remain closed until talks between the college officials and the students were completed.
On Thursday, a group of students staged a fast at the college campus. Talks are underway between the bar council president and the students, sources said.
On Wednesday, around 40 students were arrested for disrupting traffic along the Poonamallee High Road when they staged a protest at Central Railway station. They were protesting based on media reports that the college premises would be shifted out of the present campus to the outskirts of the city.
According to sources, land had currently been identified for the college in Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur, but the process of shifting would not affect any of the present students. "The entire process would take more than two years, and all students admitted on this campus would be allowed to complete their education here," the source said.
Earlier, the PWD had also issued a statement saying the structure of the law college building was unstable.
