This year, the State board class XII results are scheduled to release on May 22, nearly two weeks later than last year. CBSE results are likely to be declared in the fourth week of May.
While the late results should ideally give students more time to decide on a career of their choice, it is testing times for those seeking admission to universities abroad or those outside the State. Last year, the State board results were declared on May 9. The absence of uniformity when it comes to admission dates and beginning of academic year across universities means that some students may miss out on the institution of their choice.
“I hope the CBSE results will not get delayed. Singapore is my first option for a humanities programme. I can send in my CV and recommendations, but admission depends on my class XII marks,” says Shreya Murali. Her friends abroad have already received their call letters from universities in Singapore, she says. The application submission process for a majority of humanities and science programmes in Singapore end by April.
Since both CBSE and State board examinations ended in March, students and parents hope results are declared without much delay so as to give them adequate time to apply to different colleges.
The intermediate second year results in Andhra Pradesh were declared on April 24, while in Kerala it will be announced on May 16. For students planning to join engineering colleges in these two states, there is hope as entrance examination results will be declared much later. But the real worry is for those seeking admission to arts and science colleges outside Tamil Nadu.
Christ University, Bangalore, began selling application forms for UG programmes for 2012-13 in December itself, and some students have already got call letters from the institute. St. Xavier's College in Mumbai has announced on its official website that admissions will begin once Maharashtra State board higher secondary results, expected by end of May or early June, are declared.
Students seeking admission to arts and science colleges in the State can relax for the time being as the Directorate of Collegiate Education has instructed that colleges reopen only by June 18.
Arts and science colleges in the city have begun sale of application forms though. Stella Maris College and Ethiraj College for Women announced on their websites that sale of application forms would began on May 2. Some other colleges will begin the process this week.
“The idea behind early sale of applications is to avoid rush before the admission process formally begins. Also, students have to be given 10 working days to finish the application procedure after the declaration of results,” says S. Narasimhan, principal, D.G. Vaishnav College.
