: Demanding the release of Piyush Manush, a group of social activists on Monday demanded a judicial probe into the alleged torture of the Salem-based activist inside the prison.

Mr. Piyush, convenor of Salem Citizen’s forum, was arrested along with two others on July 8 after they protested against the construction of an overbridge by the Railways at Mulluvadi gate in Salem. Alleging that the construction activity was being undertaken without giving prior notice, the activists had demanded adequate compensation and rehabilitation of those affected. While his associates were granted bail, Piyush’s plea was rejected.

Addressing a press conference here today, G. Sundarrajan of Poovulagin Nanbargal alleged that the activist was beaten up by a group of 30 persons inside the prison. “We want a medical team to treat him first. We also want a judicial inquiry into the attack,” he said.

Madhumita Dutta of the Chennai Solidarity Group said the State Human Right Commission has taken cognisance of the attack on him inside prison. “We are following up on that. If Piyush doesn’t get bail at the magistrate’s court on Tuesday, we will approach the High Court,” she said.

The activists also alleged that Piyush was deliberately targeted by the police as he had opposed many projects of multinational companies that endangered the environment.

“He is also being targeted for his role in seeking a public apology from police officials in Vinupriya suicide case,” Mr. Sundarrajan claimed.

Viduthalai Rajendran, general secretary, Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam, said there was no protection for activists and social welfare workers in Tamil Nadu.

Activists at the meeting said it was ironical that only recently Piyush was given an award by a national television channel for his work during the Chennai floods.

A number of volunteers held up placards in support of the Salem-based activist at the Chennai Press Club. Actor Rohini too extended her support for the activist.

Kanimozhi condemns

Condemning the arrest of Piyush, DMK MP Kanimozhi said the incident was yet another proof that the State government would not take criticism in the right spirit.

“Dissenting views strengthen democracy. But the AIADMK government always stifles criticism even though the Supreme Court has indicted it a few days ago,” Ms. Kanimozhi said in a statement.
