Chennai police on Saturday introduced a ‘tenant information form,' as part of the enumeration process of hundreds of tenants residing in the city.
The forms are available at all police stations and can be downloaded soon from the Tamil Nadu Police website.
Elaborating on the initiative, Commissioner of Police J. K. Tripathy said landlords planning to rent out their houses can collect the form from any police station and should hand it over to the police with information about the tenant, including his / her photograph and photocopy of a valid ID card.
“We will keep a database on the information received and if required we will verify the information furnished,” Mr. Tripathy added.
Irrespective of whether the tenant is a local or from out of the State, they should provide details of their permanent address, office address with job description and the address of his/her previous residence.

Though it is welcome measure, some blacksheeps may leak out the information to social criminals who will easily locate senior citizens or ladies with young children living alone and thefts and blackmailing may increase.
Streamlining of Information on Tenants and owners is a good step. I am not sure if the Owners will come forward with this information as many do not want to pay higher taxes!!! The owners must submit a LEASE Agreement between the Owner and Tenant to the Govt. The Govt must do a background check for any criminal activity in two days for the owner to rent his place..... It needs to be done for the safety and security of ALL. This will cause Inconvenience in the beginning but it is worth the trouble.
Each and every owner cannot go over to the local Police station, since many a owner living in other states and even other countries. So, facility of filing tenant form online to a specific email id will make it easier for the owners as well as the police department, which is already busy. When, all over the world paper work is being reduced to keep green home, by making everything online, this may also be allowed to do online. So, every Police station need not keep hundreds of files and lacs of application forms, which is a recurring job and needs separate force. Moreover, it is not possible for every tenant to give his previous address, since many are living for decades in the same home. so, the authorities must think over before making it a mandatory.
