The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) Department on Monday retrieved land worth Rs. 35 crore belonging to the Thirukachi Nambi and Sri Varadharaja Perumal temple in Poonamallee.

Officials removed a number of encroachments that had been situated on the 2.16 acre property for over 15 years.

According to department officials, two persons had encroached upon the property, constructed and then rented out around 25 shops.

“We have removed the shops after due process of the law. The encroaching party had approached the Madras High Court. However, the court finally directed the HR & CE department to remove all the encroachments. The land has been now restored to the temple,” said an official.
