The Chennai Corporation Council on Tuesday passed a total of 53 resolutions, including one to lease out land at Tiruvottiyur to the Chennai Port Trust for setting up a container trailer parking lot.
The parking lot is one of the long pending demands of over 3,000 trailer drivers and cleaners who off-load containers at the port. Following a strike by drivers and cleaners on Monday, the Port Trust convened a meeting of representatives of various associations on Tuesday and promised to look into their 18-point charter of demands.
S.R. Raja, secretary of Trailer Owners Association, who participated in the meeting, said the drivers had wanted drinking water facilities inside the port and patch work on a bridge near the zero gate, which the port authorities had promised to expedite.
The Mayor announced that the Chennai Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan would ink a pact in a day or two to lease the land to the Port Trust. He said the process was being speeded up, taking into consideration the urgency of the matter and need to reduce accidents in north Chennai.
Among the resolutions passed was one to impart Spoken English language training to teachers of the city schools. The training would be given in batches of 50 and would Rs. 800 per person.
The Council also passed a resolution to recruit personnel to control the pig menace in the city. It will also be levying fines for littering on the streets.
