Land acquisition delaying reservoir: CM

The execution of a reservoir project in Kannankottai village of Tiruvallur district has been stalled due to “the refusal of owners to part with their lands,” Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said on Saturday.

Aimed at storing 1,000 million cubic feet of Krishna water in two fillings for supply of drinking water to Chennai, the reservoir is being formed by merging the Kannankottai Hissa Rajaneri tank and Thervaikandigai tank.

Estimated to cost ₹330 crore, the proposed water body will provide assured irrigation facilities to the existing ayacut of 740 acres. This year’s policy note of the Public Works Department stated that “60% of work has been completed.”

The Chief Minister told reporters that negotiations had been held to convince the landowners of the need for handing over the lands. “Compensation is being provided [to the landowners]. This work is going on rapidly. The work [of building the reservoir] will be completed in four-five months,” Mr. Palaniswami added.
