The principal sessions court on Thursday granted bail to R.M. Kumar alias ‘Kudirai’ Kumar, who was arrested in the Mercedes accident case.

On Monday, the Madras High Court granted conditional bail to Shaji Purushothaman, who was arrested on charges of drunk driving. One boy was killed and four persons injured in the accident on May 23.

Kumar was arrested on the same day. In his bail petition, he said he had been in custody for past 71 days.

Considering the duration of custody and the completion of a substantial part of the investigation, G. Chockalingam, Principal Sessions Judge, granted him conditional bail.

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court directed Shaji to pay another Rs.92,018 to a hospital at Anna Nagar towards the medical expenses of Subharashitha, who was injured in the accident, by Friday. In June, Shaji had paid Rs. 5 lakh to the Soundarapandian Bone and Joint Hospital and Research Institute for treatment.

The court had already been told that Shaji would bear the girl’s medical expenses. The victim underwent surgery on July 24.
