Traffic on the congested stretch between Maduravoyal and Arumbakkam is expected to ease from July with the completion of the main flyover being constructed as part of the upcoming Koyambedu grade separator.
According to officials of National Highways Authority of India, the implementing agency, the Koyambedu junction may soon be relieved of its heavy traffic with the construction of the entire grade separator there set to be completed by September.
The work on the main flyover has been completed except for construction of four spans of the total 67 spans. Each of the two carriageways will be 11 metres wide. The land acquisition process from a private establishment on Arumbakkam was delaying the completion of the flyover, sources said.
Work on the four service roads along the facility and the three-lane road below the grade separator provided for the traffic between Vadapalani and Anna Nagar have almost been completed, an official said.
The design of the grade separator would be similar to a three-leaf clover and one side would have two loops, unlike the facility in Kathipara.
The Koyambedu grade separator would have the loops connecting traffic from Anna Nagar to Maduravoyal and Arumbakkam to Anna Nagar on the same side.
About 70 per cent of the work to construct the four loops has also been completed.
This would be the third such grade separator on Inner Ring Road after facilities in Kathipara and Padi.
The Rs.100-crore project is being implemented at the junction that witnesses a traffic of about one lakh passenger car units during peak hours daily, the official added.
Motorists expect that that the grade separator would put an end to the traffic congestion experienced during the rush hour at the junction, which is a crucial link between Inner Ring Road and Poonamallee High Road.
