Kolaikaranpettai may be renamed after CM

July 27, 2013 02:33 am | Updated 10:00 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Chennai Corporation council on Friday passed a resolution requesting the State government to name Kolaikaranpettai after Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

This is likely to end two decades of struggle by residents to have the name of their neighbourhood changed.

Mayor Saidai Duraisamy announced the neighbourhood would be named ‘Jayalalithaa Nagar.’

The names of the neighbourhood’s two streets that originated five decades ago had proved a source of embarrassment for over 500 residents. A few months ago, they had even covered the names on the signboards with black paint.

The Corporation council also passed a resolution on Thursday to rename Halls Road as Tamil Salai.
