In what the police described as “tactical operation”, suspects who allegedly kidnapped 13-year-old R. Keerthivasan of Anna Nagar released him on Tuesday after taking “minimal” ransom.
The boy was kidnapped on Monday evening by an armed gang that assaulted his car driver Govindaraju and drove away. Abandoning the car on the Ambattur Industrial Estate-Tirumangalam Road, the accused got into other vehicles and escaped with the boy, police sources said.
“Our objective was to ensure the safe release of the child. The identity of the accused is not clear. A very minimal sum was paid and it was a tactful operation that went on through the night. Though we knew the exact location of the gang, it was risky to conduct a storming operation. The family was in constant touch with the kidnappers and the boy…we allowed things to happen and got the boy back,” Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran said.
Parrying questions on the quantum of the ransom or whether Keerthivasan was released after negotiated settlement, Mr. Rajendran said details of the case could not be divulged at this stage. “We are confident of nabbing the accused soon. The family received a threat that the boy would be kidnapped a few months ago. Investigation revealed that the call was made with a SIM card activated with fake address,” he said.
Mr. Rajendran said more than 400 police personnel were involved in the operation that lasted about 24 hours.
Police swooped down on a specific residential area and sealed all escape routes for the accused.
“We almost confined the accused there and forced them to release the boy. One of the vehicles used to commit the offence has been seized. Police were keen on the safety of Keerthivasan more than anything else,” the Police Commissioner said.
