A 25-year-old man, who was kidnapped by a gang for ransom from Kelly's on Tuesday night, was reportedly released by his abductors on Wednesday afternoon.

Police sources said Mohammed Asan, a resident of A.K. Samy Nagar, 6th Street in Kelly's, runs a family business dealing in imported gift items. The family has a shop on NSC Bose Road.

“Around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, six men in a car intercepted the autorickshaw in which Asan was travelling on A.K. Samy Nagar 4th Street with some cash in a bag. They assaulted the autorickshaw driver and kidnapped Asan,” said an investigating officer attached to the Secretariat Colony police.

On Wednesday morning, Asan's father Mohammed Khaja (52) received a phone call from the abductors allegedly demanding a ransom of Rs.1.5 crore. Khaja alerted the police, who formed teams to investigate the kidnap.

Around noon, Khaja received a phone call from his son saying that he had been released by the kidnappers at Tiruvallur and is on his way home. The suspects took Rs.5 lakh and a mobile phone from Asan which he was carrying at the time of his abduction, police sources said. A case under various Sections of the IPC, including one relating to kidnap, has been registered by the Secretariat Colony police and a team headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kilpauk, S. Lakshmi is investigating the case.
