Members of The Hindu Office and National Press Employees Union paid encomiums to G. Kasturi, former editor, who passed away recently, at a condolence meeting organised here on Monday.
A number of employees paid floral tributes to the former editor and managing director who played a key role in the newspaper’s expansion and modernisation. Many of them fondly remembered his role in preventing retrenchment of employees during a phase of modernisation. They referred to his confidence in the ability of employees to cope with challenges that accompanied modernisation.
“When some experts suggested hiring new employees, particularly technically qualified personnel, during computerisation a few decades ago, he said ‘no’. Instead, he trained the existing employees and made them work with computers,” said E. Gopal, president of The Hindu Office and National Press Employees Union.
“He gave a promise that he will not retrench. The employees were able to cope with change because of his vision and the confidence he had in them. The Union remembers all this today,” said Mr. Gopal.
“Many employees got the opportunity to work with the boss who himself trained them in many aspects,” he added.
The former editor, who motivated many employees through the turbulent decades, died on September 21.
