Kamarajar Port eyes religious tours

April 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - CHENNAI:

Kamarajar Port Ltd (KPL) is focusing on religious tours and coastal movement, for which it would team up with the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry governments.

“We have been getting enquiries from the trade for commencement of coastal movement of containers. We might start moving 100 to 150 containers through barges and small ferry from Ennore to Puducherry.

The move is to develop Puducherry as a small hub aimed at benefiting traders in Cuddalore and Villupuram districts,” said a KPL official on Saturday.

KPL, which had evinced interest to develop the Puducherry Port, was in the process of finalising a consultant to prepare the Detailed Project Report. So far, KPL had received four bids. It would be opened on April 24. The consultant had to submit the report within 45 days.

Asked how soon it would begin the coastal movement, he said that entry point of Puducherry port had to be deepened as the current depth of three metres was insufficient even for small boats. The local agencies had already commenced the deepening work.

On the religious tours, he said they had detailed talks with the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary about it. But, it was yet to be finalised. They might be roping in Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation and it might be launched in phases.

The first phase would run up to Mamallapuram, Puducherry from Chennai, followed by short tours to Nagapattinam, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari. The tours would start from Chennai Port as it was located in the heart of the city, he said.
