Mayor says that all arches will be studied; action to be taken against those violating regulations
The Kalaignar Karunanidhi Golden Jubilee Arch in Saidapet has come under the scanner of the Chennai Corporation.
Mayor Saidai S.Duraisamy on Monday announced that the civic body will commence a study of all arches on roads in the city. Even as the Mayor was making the announcement, AIADMK councillors stressed the need for scrutiny of all aspects pertaining to Kalaignar Karunanidhi Golden Jubilee Arch in Saidapet.
Responding to the concerns voiced by Subhash Chandra Bose of the DMK on installation of the Tamil Nadu Assembly Diamond Jubilee Memorial Arch near Napier Bridge, the Mayor said “The Corporation will conduct a study of arches in the city. This is in response to the request made by Subhash Chandra Bose to conduct a proper study of all such structures.”
Meanwhile, AIADMK councillors raised the issue of the Kalaignar Karunanidhi Golden Jubilee Arch and the Mayor said the civic body will take a decision on demolition of any arch that has been constructed without adhering to regulations.
Following the announcement by the Mayor, DMK members walked out of the Council. Mr. Bose said the DMK members spoke only about the inconvenience caused to people by the recent decisions of the civic body on Anna Arch and diamond jubilee memorial arch without a complete study of the existing conditions.
“But the Mayor failed to notice the genuine concerns and unnecessarily brought Kalaignar Karunanidhi Golden Jubilee Arch in Saidapet under the scanner,” said Mr. Bose.
The Chennai Corporation council on Monday approved an area of 4,800 sq m in Island Grounds as an alternative location for proposed Tamil Nadu Assembly Diamond Jubilee Memorial Arch. The arch was initially proposed to be built on Rajaji Salai and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had laid the foundation stone for the Arch on October 29, 2012.
A 41-feet-high arch was proposed to be built close to an archeologically significant Fort St. George, which is more than 350 years old. However, the National Monuments Authority in Delhi turned it down as rules prohibit new constructions within 100 metres of any notified monument.
The State government then asked the Chennai Corporation to identify an alternative site for the arch. The Corporation then identified the spot near Napier Bridge.

Building arch or bringing it down will have no impact for the common man
directly... But what happiness would the corporation get by bringing it
down?
When will common sense dawn on petty politicians to do something good
for the common man? What use us a statue or an arch?
This arch should be brought down as soon as possible. The
area around the arch should be cleaned and pedestrianised for the benefit of the
common man.
Good decision but why the governmnent re-erected the anna arch? now considering to remove kalaingar arch? we need a government to work for people welfare and social justice not for personal vengens.
Why would rich politicians think about spending money in useful way? Forget about politicians, what does public in general remember and vote for? Do they consider who is good and capable before casting their vote? Do they spend time to review how good the candidate is before casting their vote? Peopl vote for reasons such as freebees, case for vote, candidate of same caste, etc.. They get carried away by the amount candidate spend and vote for him/her rather than spending their time & money to promote good candidates. Politicians work hard to cheat people and once they win, they reap the benefits by earning and by promoting things of their interest... so blame ourselves THE PUBLIC
Good. Take it down. Any arches that is becoming a propaganda machine for
the political parties should be taken down. Whether it is Maya's
statues, Elephant statues or Kanshi Ram's statues, bring down all the
statues, because it is not serving the people.
The TN Legislature should pass a law that says arches, monuments,
statues, and memorials in public land, in honor of a public figure,
should be erected only 40 years posthumously.
Arches wont do any good for common people. Instead of spending crores of rupees on Arches and Statues it could be usufully spent in eradication of povery and empowermnet of good education to the needy will be a fitting tribute for tmilnadu assembly dimond jubliee celebrtions.
Neither the Kalaignar arch nor the proposed secretariat arch are going be of any use to common tax paying men. And fighting over such worthless item, the councilors are directly in dereliction of their duty for which they are elected. Be it corporation council or Legislative assembly or parliament, our so called elected representative do not even have respect for its code of conduct. Its a shame nearly 50% of time is lost by these useless gimmicks for worthless issues.
