Released on Friday, actor Rajinikanth’s Kabali raked in crores on the opening day, and this continued to be a talking point across social media over the weekend.
While the debate is on, trade analysts have speculated that Kabali’s day one collections might be between Rs. 80 crore to Rs. 90 crore including the Tamil Nadu, India and overseas markets.
The Saturday and Sunday collection details will be available very soon, said an analyst.
Directed by Pa. Ranjith, the movie has been getting mixed reviews with some praising the subjects the movie dealt with, while others suggesting the film could have been better.
While die-hard Rajini fans have mixed reactions to the movie, many praised the actor's look in the film as an ageing don and were appreciative of his younger look in a few sequences as well.
While majority felt that the second half was rather slow, there is a rumour that the film makers have decided to trim the movie in the coming week based on the feedback from the audience.
According to industry sources, the Chennai distribution area alone could have raked in about Rs. 30 crore on the first day of release.
The movie, which had a massive worldwide release, was released in around 400 screens in the U.S. alone and Cine Galaxy USA, the company which distributed the film there, tweeted that the first day collection was around $2.7 million (approximately Rs. 18 crore).
The movie was leaked online on illegal websites and the makers are still working towards taking down pirated copies that were being circulated.
Amidst all the hype surrounding the release of the movie, Rajinikanth, who was holidaying in the U.S., returned to the city on Sunday. Coming out of the airport, he waved to the waiting crowd from his car.
The actor is expected to resume filming his upcoming film ‘2.0’.
