Justice Eqbal is new CJ for High Court

President Pratibha Patil has appointed M.Y. Eqbal, acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court as the Chief Justice of the Madras High court.

He succeeds Justice H.L. Gokhale, who has been elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court.

3 year tenure

He will have a tenure of around three years as Chief Justice.

Justice Eqbal (59), who hails from Ranchi, was initially appointed as a Judge of the Patna High Court in 1996 and became a Judge of the Jharkhand High Court in November 2000.

He was made acting Chief Justice of the same High Court after the elevation of Justice Gyan Sudha Misra as a Judge of the Supreme Court.
