To ensure safety of pedestrians, the State Highways Department has placed steel barricades at the intersection of Jawaharlal Nehru Main Road and 15th Street in Ambedkar Colony, located behind Udayam theatre in Ashok Nagar.
This measure has led to better regulation of motorists entering Jawaharlal Nehru Main Road from 15th Street. Now, they have to slow down and take note of motorists coming from the Kasi Theatre area and then cross the intersection.
The arrangement also regulates motorists coming from interior streets.
Now, they can cross the junction only at the space allocated between the barricades and can’t encroach upon the preserves of pedestrians — a pedestrian crossing — anymore.
The intersection in Ambedkar Colony is 100 metres from the Kasi Theatre junction and is wide.
In the absence of traffic police personnel, motorists drive at a breakneck speed.
Earlier, neither motorists from the interior streets nor pedestrians were able to cross the Jawaharlal Nehru Main Road (along the ESIC hospital) during rush hour, due to continuous flow of vehicles from the Ekkatuthangal side.
According to police sources, minor accidents such as skidding are frequent at the intersection.
“Traffic at the intersection has been streamlined and it is of immense relief to the pedestrians,” says S. Mariammal, a resident of K.K. Nagar.
