Gold jewellery weighing more than 100 sovereigns was stolen from a house in Tambaram on Tuesday. The daring crime, which sent shockwaves all through the locality, came to light when one of the residents returned home in the evening.

According to police, Rajesh and his wife Gomathi are software engineers working in Mahindra IT City in Singaperumal Koil. The couple live in a house on Second Main Road, TTK Nagar, Irumbuliyur, Tambaram. Gomathi delivered a baby a few days ago at a hospital in the city.

While Rajesh stayed with her in the hospital, his father Deenadayalan, a former railway employee, used to shuttle between the hospital and home. After staying in the hospital the whole of Tuesday, Deenadayalan returned home late in the evening and saw the front door open.

An almirah inside the house was broken open and damaged.

It was ransacked and jewellery weighing nearly 120 sovereigns was stolen.

Police personnel from different wings reached the spot and picked up clues from the scene of crime.

Further investigations were in progress, police said, adding that special crime teams have been formed.
