Two months after a Mumbai-bound passenger complained that gold and diamond jewellery were stolen from his hand baggage at the Chennai airport, police arrested two men on Wednesday evening and recovered the jewellery in full. A search is on for a third suspect.
Briefing mediapersons on Thursday, Chennai Suburban Police Commissioner S.R.Jangid said A.Vasudevan (52) of T.Nagar had taken a flight to Mumbai on December 4.
On reaching Mumbai, he complained to the police that the jewellery, worth Rs.15 lakh, was missing from his baggage.
Policemen going through the database of video images captured by closed-circuit television cameras spotted a man, with the assistance of two others, stealing a pouch containing the jewellery from Mr. Vasudevan’s hand baggage.
While Mr. Vasudevan left for Mumbai by a 9.30 p.m. flight, the three men took a flight about an hour later. A police team went to Mumbai and with the help of local police established that the suspects belonged to Andheri. Two of them, Ushakant Janardhan and Dwarkesh Dedagowda, were picked up.
The three suspects had robbed cash from air passengers in Chennai and Mumbai in the past, but this was the first time they were apprehended.
