For those seeking exquisite design and a variety in jewellery, ‘The UE Jewellery Expo' that opened at Hotel Ambassador Pallava in Egmore here on Thursday will be an apt choice.
From diamonds and pearls to precious stones, the expo showcases contemporary collection of jewellery from different parts of the country. What makes this exhibition special is that the 24 participating jewellers are manufacturers who supply to some of the leading showrooms.
Though the price of gold is on the rise, the exhibition attracted several visitors for its dazzling array , including necklaces, pendants, bracelets, earrings and rings.
Most of the stalls showcase intricately carved jewellery studded with diamonds, which are not usually found in the showrooms .
One of the exhibitors, Somil Y.Shah of Sheetal Diamonds, Chennai, said the changing tastes of people, particularly youngsters, means more business for diamond merchants. “We have ornaments that cost up to Rs.15 lakh and also those priced as low as Rs.3,000 at the exhibition,” he said.
A wide range of light-weight ornaments are also on display . Rahul Chhawchharia of Traditions, Kolkata, said ethnic designs have their own demand in Chennai. The stall has gold ‘jhumkas' and chains studded with precious stones.
Thewa jewellery from Rajasthan, which has gold figures etched on the background of transparent coloured glass, is one of the eye-catchers at the expo. Sunglasses and watches set with diamonds are good choices for gifts.
Some of the ornaments on display include gem set jewellery, minakari, polki, kundan and antique pieces.
A few stalls also have semi-precious stone ornaments.
V.K.Manoj, project director of United Exhibitions, said most participants have special offers for the customers.
“We expect a turnover of nearly Rs.50 lakh from this exhibition,” he said. It is open between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. till June 20.
