State Secretary of the Janata Dal (United) party allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the party office in Pattammal Street, Mandaveli on Wednesday night.

Abhiramapuram police said JD (U) functionary Angappan (56), was a resident of Kabali Thottam, N block in Mandaveli. He worked as an office assistant with the Office of the Commissioner of Revenue Administration in Ezhilagam.

He left home on Wednesday evening, telling his wife Janaki that he was going to spend the night in the party office.

On Thursday morning, a party worker alerted the police after spotting Angappan's body hanging from the ceiling in a second floor room.

Police added that Angappan had left a suicide note stating that his ill-health and debts had led him to take the extreme step.
