AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Wednesday asked the Centre to drop its proposal for a common entrance test for postgraduate medical courses, as it would affect the welfare of the students from poor, underprivileged, rural and backward sections.
In a statement, she said the Medical Council of India had informed the Supreme Court about the proposal. According to reports, the MCI had also told the apex court that the draft proposal to introduce the entrance exams would be submitted shortly.
The Centre's policies were against the principles of social justice and the DMK, a constituent, had not opposed it, she said.
The MCI had informed the court that the Centre had agreed to the CET and the proposal also involved counselling after the exams and another test at the end of the course.
When there was a growing demand for shifting the subject of education from the Concurrent List to the State List, she asked if Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi wasn't aware that the Centre's proposals were against State autonomy.
