The Tamil Nadu government on Friday informed the Supreme Court that it would restrict the jallikattu event to four months in a year from January 15 to May 15, instead of five months as contemplated in the law enacted for its regulation.
During the last hearing, a Bench of Justice R.V. Raveendran and Justice H.L. Gokhale had asked the State to consider its suggestion for restricting the event to two months – January/February – in a year, instead of five months observing that that the sporting event must not become a business proposition.
The Bench also wanted the government to consider increasing the organisers' licence fee deposit to Rs.20 lakh from Rs.2 lakh.
During the resumed hearing on Friday, State counsel R. Nedumaran said the State had filed its response.
The Bench granted time to the Animal Welfare Board of India to file its reply and posted the matter for further hearing on October 27.
