Officials of the Forest Department rescued a four-year-old female jackal from Odaikuppam area near Velankanni Church in Besant Nagar on Wednesday morning.

An official from the department said they received a call from the police after residents informed them about a jackal on the premises of a locked house. A team of eight officials reached the spot and saw the jackal sitting under the staircase of the house.

“We had to spend nearly an hour to catch the jackal and tried using a cage and a net. Finally, we had to grab hold of the animal since it was not moving into the cage,” he said.

A large number of residents collected at the spot to catch a glimpse of the animal.

It is believed to have strayed into the area from Blue Cross Road, where some compounds have a large population of snakes, jackals and deer.
