A 29-year-old software engineer, D. Dominic, employed with an IT major in the city, succumbed to injuries on Monday after a suicide bid owing to mounting debts. His mother and sister, who also attempted suicide, are in a stable condition. The trio cut their veins as they were unable to withstand pressure from K.Saravanan, a real-estate agent in Kolathur, from whom they borrowed money. Saravanan is missing.
Last year, Dominic’s mother, Gloriya, wife of Don John Bosco (60), who works as a night watchman at St. John’s International School near Poonamallee, borrowed Rs. 5 lakh from Savaranan to meet the family’s medical expenses. Gloriya was confident of repaying the amount as Dominic was an employee in a software firm and her daughter Nancy works for a private shipping cargo company.
However, the family increasingly found it difficult to repay the loan which was at 10 per cent interest.
On Friday, they consumed pills which were past the expiry date but when nothing happened, slit their veins. Nancy, who could not bear the pain, called her uncle William on phone. William and some neighbours rushed the trio to Government Stanley Hospital.
