Investigators have been left confused after they came across transactions involving Shaji Purushothaman’s credit card in Malaysia even as immigration officers have confirmed that he has not left the country.
The Mercedes accident in Egmore that killed a 13-year-old boy and left a 10-year-old girl injured occurred nearly a fortnight ago. Despite nabbing the three persons, including ‘Kudirai’ Kumar, who were in the car when the accident happened, the cops have not been able to arrest Shaji. To get some headway in the case, the police raided the Empee Group’s corporate office. “We rummaged through the office for his bank transactions and found that his credit card had been used in Malaysia. But when we asked the immigration officers, they confirmed that he had not gone abroad. We are not sure whether it was used by someone else to divert the attention of the investigators,” said a senior police officer.
The police also found that some other bank transactions had been done abroad. They claim that they have also secured other documents which can help in the case. The cops, however, are not willing to take public help by circulating the photos of Shaji. “Once he is nabbed, we will be holding an identification parade. The victim’s family and witnesses will be called,” said the officer.
Reliable sources in the Empee Group said that Shaji had not contacted his family members after the accident. However, he is in constant touch with some of his close friends.
Meanwhile, Shaji Purushothaman has provided Rs.5 lakh to the family of 10-year old Subha Rakshita for treatment. “His advocate gave our lawyer the money. They have assured that they will give money if further treatment is needed. We would have been happy if the family had given us the money without the court’s intervention,” said the girl’s father, I.Kumar, an auto-rickshaw driver. He said that he was feeling bad as the government had not even bothered to at least visit his daughter. “My daughter is very beautiful. Since she is badly injured, I am worried about her future. My family would be happy if Shaji’s father meets my daughter."
