The promotion of sustainable alternate energy sources, fuels other than oil and energy-efficient equipment are among strategies initiated in the country to achieve energy security, P. Sivakumar, Director, Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), said on Thursday.
Speaking at the 21 convocation day at Sathyabama University, the scientist said only 1 per cent of the country's total power requirement was met by renewable sources, unlike in the case of Denmark and Germany where 25 per cent and 16 per cent respectively of energy requirements were met by wind energy.
The installed power capacity of wind power generation in India was 1,253 megawatt (MW) and there were ample possibilities of increasing it. “Your children will be grateful if you invest your future in the development of renewable energy resources and innovation of energy efficient measures,” Mr. Sivakumar said.
DRDO's role
Delving into the role of Defence Research and Development Organisation, Mr. Sivakumar said unmanned vehicles were very important for various applications and the emerging market was in the domain of personal and service robots, especially in the defence sector. Mr. Sivakumar received an honorary doctorate for his contribution to the field of science and technology on the occasion from Jeppiar, founder and Chancellor of the private university.
Others who received honorary doctorates for their contribution to their respective fields were Sriram Parasuram, musician and composer, his wife and playback singer Anooradha Sriram, and musician and composer Rajkumar Bharathi.
