In the absence of speed-breakers on Vijaya Nagar Fifth Main Road, First Cross Street and First Main Road, pedestrians are at high risk for accidents.
“We find it difficult to walk on these roads. Most motorists drive at a breakneck speed and don’t bother to slow down for pedestrians,” says M. Prabhakaran, a resident.
Residents also point out that unauthorised parking of vehicles along these stretches has narrowed their width. Pedestrians walk on the carriageway.
They have also sought deployment of traffic police personnel at the intersection of Vijay Nagar First Main Road and Velachery Bypass Road during rush hour.
There is a continuous flow of vehicles from Velachery Main Road, Vijaya Nagar Fifth Main Road, First Cross Street and First Main Road and they converge at the intersection. Therefore, pedestrians have to wait for more than five minutes to cross this junction.
“Making matters worse, many motorists drive in the wrong direction to enter Velachery Main Road towards Medavakkam,” says S. Vinod, a resident.
The Chennai Traffic Police have promised to do the needful after conducting a feasibility study.
