Officials of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption on Wednesday arrested an Inspector of Police for allegedly taking bribe from a mobile juice vendor here.

According to a source in the agency, D. Tirumalai (34) of Villippuram district has been selling juice in a pushcart in and around Egmore area for the last three years. On Tuesday, he approached the DVAC Deputy Superintendent of Police K. Ponnuchamy and lodged a complaint that the Inspector (Egmore - Traffic) S.A. Arockiadass (54) had demanded Rs. 3,000 as bribe from him.

When he expressed his inability to pay, the official had threatened to harass him by imposing a penalty on charges of traffic violations. A special team led by Mr. Ponnuchamy laid a trap and arrested Arockadass soon after he asked Tirumalai to keep the cash in the dash board of his official car.

“We were waiting in another vehicle near the juice stall. On the instructions of the Inspector, the vendor kept the cash in the car. The money was recovered intact. The accused was produced in a session’s court and remanded to judicial custody,” a DVAC official said.
