Divisional Fire Officer N.Priya Ravichandran, who was injured in a fire that broke out in Kalas Mahal a week ago, is responding well to treatment.
Speaking to The Hindu on Monday, her husband S. Ravichandran said: “On Friday, doctors operated upon her right hand, for a skin grafting procedure that was initiated on her”
On Tuesday, doctors would examine her and operate upon other parts that suffered burns in the accident.
Ms. Priya who is the Divisional Fire Officer, Chennai City Central, Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFRS), was admitted to Apollo Hospitals soon after she suffered serious injuries when the roof of the old building caved in.
“The patient is stable. The doctor will proceed with the surgery after examining her again,” said a spokesperson for Apollo Hospitals.
On Thursday last week, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa visited the hospital and met the injured fire officer and her family and assured them that all medical expenses would be borne by the government.
The family of Leading Fireman K. Anbazhagan, who died in the accident, is yet to come to terms with the tragedy. His wife, one daughter and son are in Chidambaram to complete the rituals after his passing away.
His other two daughters have returned to Chennai.
According to sources in the State government, it may consider making an out-of-turn appointment of a member of Mr. Anbazhagan's family. The decision is expected to be taken soon by the Chief Minister, sources said.
The engagement ceremony of A. Sharmila, his eldest daughter, will take place on January 29 as was scheduled, according to family sources.
