Families living in tenements constructed by the government in Okkiyam Thoraipakkam and those who will soon be shifting there before the beginning of the next academic year can look forward to improved facilities.

Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board will hand over all roads and reserve sites to Chennai Corporation and other agencies next week for upgrading the amenities.

Corporation officials inspected the site of 15,656 houses in Kannagi Nagar, 6,000 houses in Ezhil Nagar and 2,048 houses under the Emergency Tsunami Reconstruction Project (ETRP) in Okkiyam Thoraipakkam last week.

The TNSCB has handed over 15 km of roads in the neighbourhoods to the Corporation. The civic body is set to take possession of around 7.2 km of additional roads. “Currently, around 90,000 people live in the neighbourhoods. Over 3,400 houses are vacant. More people evicted from roads and canals will be resettled next month. We plan to give the best civic facilities for them,” said an official.

In Kannagi Nagar, a playground in 2,000 square metres of land, 20 parks, two primary schools and three burial grounds will get a makeover. Metropolitan Transport Corporation will develop a bus terminus in a 1.25-acre piece of land and Rs. 2 crore has been allotted for its construction.

“The community hall is being used as police station. We have identified land for a new police station,” said an official. The area has seven ration shops and 19 Children’s Centres under Integrated Child Development Services.

In Ezhil Nagar, a primary health centre, high school and a primary school, vocational training centre, post office and a library will be constructed, and a playground created.
