Many factories were shut down during the previous DMK regime but the party’s leader M.K. Stalin continues to give misleading information on the existing condition of the industries in the State, said Finance Minister D. Jayakumar.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function to give away awards on industrial safety on Saturday, Mr. Jayakumar said factories such as Dunlop were shut down during the DMK regime but the AIADMK government had consistently taken initiatives to attract investment and revive industries.

“The State has 45,000 industries and 20 lakh labourers. The government has started implementation of welfare measures for the workers of various industries. We are striving for the achievement of zero accidents in the industries,” he said. Labour Minister Nilofer Kafeel said the government had started creating awareness among workers of industries to promote safety. “Unorganised migrant workers in the construction industry from other States are also receiving training on safety,” she said.

Innovative measures

Labour Department secretary P. Amudha said industries have to adopt innovative measures to conserve water. “Workers have devised new methods and innovations to improve conditions, prevent accidents and save water. One industrial unit is saving 10,000 litres of water per day by means of a small innovation,” said Ms. Amudha.

Urging industries to take initiatives on safety, Ms. Amudha said “Workers are your assets. Please take care of their safety.”
