The 10 high-end luxury cars, which were detained by the police at the Uthandi toll plaza on Sunday, were released to the owners. The vehicles, worth ₹60 crore in total, were kept at the casting yard of the Metro Rail.

The cars, including Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Mercedes, Audis and Porsches, were stopped on East Coast Road, and the drivers/ owners were subjected to interrogation. Ten of them were arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving.

The drivers were let out on bail the same evening.

A senior police officer told The Hindu that after the RTO checked the cars for engine tampering, a report from the office stated that no modifications were found to the vehicles and that the sound emissions were within permissible levels . The cars were then released to the owners, who gave an undertaking that they would not indulge in racing in the future, he added.

The Income Tax Department had asked the police to provide the details of the expensive vehicles, which they followed through.
