The State is now home to two globally recognised technical institutions – the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and Anna University – a fact confirmed by World QS ranking. . While IIT-M has been ranked 43, Anna University has moved from the 300 plus band to 251-300 band.
Almost all the old IITs have made it to the table with the Indian Institute of Science being placed at 33{+r}{+d}rank. The IIT-Bombay and IIT-Delhi are ahead of IIT-Madras. The ranking that was released late on Monday has put IIT-M among the top 50 colleges in Asia. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director of IIT-M, said, “We are delighted to be listed in the top 50 Asian Universities in QS-Asia ranking for 2016. We are also encouraged by our steep rise from the 56{+t}{+h}position last year.” He said the institution had been focused on improving research, teaching and overall curriculum as part of its plan for 2020. “We will persevere and do our best to move up still further in the Asian global rankings in the coming years,” he said.
Anna University, which has around 600 colleges under its ambit and which has moved up to the 251-300 range, has an additional feather in its cap. The University’s reputation among employers is rated at 68.1 per cent, giving it an edge. On the ranking by faculty, it is placed at 293{+r}{+d}place.
According to Registrar S. Ganesan, the University is now known for its research.
The insistence that research students must publish at least two papers in journals that are widely cited has also helped, he said.
