The process of issuing identity cards under the National Population Register is on in full swing in the southern suburbs of Chennai. The process began in Chitlapakkam Town Panchayat recently, the local body being the second under Tambaram Revenue Division, after Mudichur Village Panchayat, where the process has begun.
The Ministry of Home Affairs project is being executed by Bharat Electronics Limited and involves data entry, recording of fingerprint impressions and prints of a person’s iris.
Revenue department officials said the NPR is a register of ‘usual residents’ — all those who have resided in a local area for more than 6 months and those who intend to reside for another 6 months. The department is the nodal agency for the preparing the National Population Register.
R. Mohan, Chairman of Chitlapakkam Town Panchayat, said a list of names of residents figuring in the Census of 2010 was prepared and available with the revenue staff, who along with elected representatives and staff of the local body would inform them about the camps.
When the residents visit the venues, their fingerprint impressions and iris prints are recorded and stored in laptops.
An acknowledgement is issued to them and the ID card would reach them by post in 3 months time.
