Team Kabali celebrated the success of the film after a terrific first week here in Chennai.
Speaking on the sidelines, director of the film Pa. Ranjith, who has been grabbing the headlines for his frank-speak in his interviews about caste inequalities, said that he doesn’t want to be trapped within his Dalit identity.
Reiterating that he doesn’t want to be known as a Dalit filmmaker making ‘Dalit’ films, he said: “I want to be an inspiration for Tamil society as a whole, not just for Dalits. That’s my wish.”
The filmmaker said he hoped that people didn’t perceive that he only spoke about caste inequalities in his films, because he was affected by it, adding: “I would have spoken about the inequalities in our society even if I wasn’t from an oppressed community. My point is that everybody should talk about these stuructural inequalties in our society,” he said.
Having directed actor Rajinikanth, one of the most popular and lucrative stars in Indian cinema, does he see himself doing a smaller film? “Of course, my next will be a small film,” he said.
Producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu said that the film has collected Rs. 6 crore in Chennai alone in the first six days.
“It is a record in Chennai. No other film has done this well. The film is a super success abroad as well,” he said.
He further said that the film will release in other foreign languages, including Chinese.
