The city police on Tuesday beefed up security at commercial establishments owned by Kannadigas and buses-bearing Karnataka registration numbers besides extended security arrangements at the residences of Tamil film actors Rajinikanth, Prakash Raj, Arjun, Prabhudeva and a few others, who had origins or links in Karnataka in view of escalating tension over the attack on some Tamils and their establishments in the neighbouring State over the Cauvery row.

A senior officer told The Hindu, “Special deployments were stationed at over 180 places including shops, restaurants, banks and residences of prominent persons. The City Police Commissioner has instructed us that there should not be any let up in providing security and to ensure peace in the city.”

Residences of Rajinikanth (in Poes Garden), Arjun, Prakash Raj, Prabhudeva and others were brought under the surveillance of the respective jurisdictional police station.

Private buses

As many buses of a private transport operator from Tamil Nadu were torched by an angry mob in Karnataka on Monday, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and omnibuses bound for Karnataka stayed off the roads from Monday evening.

Apprehending similar attacks on the buses, the operators did not operate the buses and kept 40 vehicles parked at Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT).

S. Krishnakumar, inspector of police, CMBT said, “We are providing round the clock security to the buses and are also on alert to avert any untoward incident here. If the operators get approval from their authorities, they will move from here. Until then, we will provide security to them.”
