A few houses in Pattinapakkam, one of the localities close to shore, were damaged due to seawater incursion following high tide accompanied by strong winds on Tuesday.
Several residents noted that the sea had advanced by 10-15 feet on Monday night and the winds were gusty.
N. Rasapan, a resident of Pattinapakkam fishing hamlet, said the sea was rough and the waves had risen high at night. It had damaged portions of a few houses close to the shore. About 700 families live in the area.
Fishing hamlets in Nemmeli along East Coast Road and Kalpakkam also experienced seawater incursion. This was due to obstacles caused by structures such as desalination plant and Kalpakkam atomic plant, said B.Maran of Tamil Nadu Meenavar Munnetra Sangam.
Residents demanded that steps must be taken to protect the fishing hamlets from sea erosion.
According to the meteorological department, strong winds triggered by monsoon currents could contribute to rough sea conditions.
Meanwhile, Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a warning that strong southwesterly winds with speeds occasionally reaching up to 55 km per hour are likely to blow along and off the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast.
Fishermen are advised to be cautious while venturing into the sea. High waves in the range up to 10-12 feet along the coast between Colachel and Kilakarai of southern Tamil Nadu are expected till June 9, the alert said.
