A host of facilities was inaugurated at the students’ hostel in Government Kilpauk Medical College here on Wednesday.
Besides a dining hall, dormitory and reverse osmosis water treatment plant at the nursing students’ hostel, sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators for used napkins were inaugurated at both nursing and medical college women’s hostels.
Inaugurating the facilities, Health Secretary V.K.Subburaj said improvement and periodical maintenance of the buildings of medical colleges, which were constructed several decades ago, was essential. Nearly Rs.25 crore was sanctioned to KMC last year to take up improvement works.
Mr. Subburaj presented awards and certificates to nearly 90 persons, including head of various departments, nurses, administrative staff and workers for their meritorious service.
Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital Dean V.Kanagasabai said the facilities were provided at a cost of nearly Rs.16 lakh.
The construction of a new hostel complex at a cost of Rs.2 crore, which would accommodate 150 students, would be completed in three months. Work to build an outpatient block worth Rs.5 crore would also be finished in four months. The process to add a casualty block and college faculty unit is underway, said Dr.Kanagasabai.
