From walks and exhibitions to traditional games, a host of events have been lined up for the Madras Week Celebrations from August 20-27.

This year, to capture moments of those who are actually a part of building the city, workers of Chennai Metro Rail were photographed.

Editor of the Mylapore Times, Vincent D’Souza said, “Who makes the city? It’s not just the politicians or other authorities alone, these workers too contribute a significant part; they build one of the biggest transport systems. We have requested them permission to exhibit the pictures in stations. It is important to recognise their work.”

They plan to organise a walk inside Fort St. George and also at Chepauk stadium. “At the stadium, there will be restricted entry and will be based on registration,” he added.

Architect Sujatha Shankar said though there have been programmes throughout the year to celebrate Madras, during this month, there are special events to revive traditional forms of entertainment too.

Historian S. Muthiah said the celebration of Madras Week had grown over the years. “It’s not a birthday we are celebrating; it is the contribution of the city to modern India,” he said.

A t-shirt exclusively made for the Madras Week was also unveiled during the event.
