In a departure from convention, University of Kalyani conferred in person the degree of science (honoris causa) to P.V.A. Mohandas, founder of MIOT at a function on Saturday.

Terming it unusual for a university to organise a special convocation, West Bengal governor and chancellor of the university, M.K. Narayanan, referring to Dr. Mohandas, said, “He came from humble beginnings and has set an example that many would like to emulate.”

Dilipkumar Mohanta, vice-chancellor of the university, praised Dr. Mohandas as an eminent physician and said the degree had been conferred for his outstanding contribution to society.

Dr. Mohandas said MIOT had grown from a 50-bed to 1000-bed institution with 47 specialties. He appreciated the work of all the doctors who had made it possible for him to bring in new specialties to the hospital.
