Holiday in three districts

February 06, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - Chennai:

The Tamil Nadu government has declared a public holiday for three districts – Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, and Thiruvarur on February 22, in connection with the Kumbakonam Mahamam festival.

The government said the holiday was being announced as a ‘very special case’ under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.

All banks, private industrial establishments, and educational institutions across these three districts will remain closed on that day.

The festival is expected to be a large and colourful affair as it occurs once every 12 years and huge crowds are expected to throng the Mahamahan tank in Kumbakonam to take a holy dip.
